"RCAF Mess and Kitchen, North Africa."
When we arrived at the airfield, we found few amenities-- no stainless steel mobile kitchens here! The kitchen staff had to create a kitchen out of whatever they could find or make, including the clay oven depicted here. There was no Mess as such. We brought our tin plates to the kitchen, accepted the day's version of canned corned beef, and then back to our tents or a nearby rock, to dine, protecting our plates from the evil dust devils which bedevilled us by seasoning our food with heavy sprinkles of sand.
